Finding a Frugal Venue for Wedding Ceremonies and Receptions

frugal wedding venueI announced that we got engaged a few weeks ago and a few people commented that they wanted to hear more about the wedding process and how we planned to save money along the way. We’ve already made a few decision regarding basics of the wedding, such as the date and the size of the guest list and those decisions are pretty basic.

We didn’t pick the date based off of anything special, we just did what worked best for us and what we could fit in the schedule. In terms of size of the guest list, it was a pretty easy decision because we have a very limited budget. We’re pretty much inviting only immediate family and we’re keeping the guest list under 20.

With those two items crossed off the wedding planning list we could now start making some more detailed decisions. The first thing on that list was the venue for the ceremony and reception. We had heard that venues could run up your budget fast so we knew we needed a plan of attack.

How to Find a Frugal Wedding Ceremony and Reception Venue for Your Wedding

Some of the best ways to come up with ideas for frugal venues is to ask people who are established in your community. We are relatively new to our area so asking friends who have lived here their whole lives was a huge help. They know the area and where to find the great deals.

Be sure to think off the beaten path and consider public areas. In general, you can rent these areas pretty cheap and it is a great way to support your local community government. If you haven’t been to the local parks in your area you might be surprised at how nice some of them are!

Make sure to check out places where you have relationships with the owners or organization. You could probably get a great deal at your local church or potentially a not-for-profit organization building that you volunteer for. Even if you don’t think they’ll let you hold an event, it probably wouldn’t hurt to ask.

If you heart is set on a more expensive venue there are still ways to be frugal. Try scheduling your ceremony and reception at off peak times of the year. Another option is to schedule it on a weekday rather than a weekend or to schedule your wedding ceremony or reception at a non-traditional time such as in the morning.

By scheduling when the venues aren’t as busy you can likely get a discount on the normal price.

Our Initial Ideas for Wedding Venues

We initially had been talking about two ideas for wedding venues that ended up not working out for various reasons. We were seriously considering having the wedding at the beach or in my parents’ back yard on the water.

The first plan was to have our wedding on the beach. We currently live just 3 blocks from some of the most beautiful beaches but we’re going to be moving into town before the wedding. The things we really didn’t like about the beach was it would be hard for some guests to be able to get to the actual ceremony (walking in sand is a horrible idea for older people) and we’d be at the mercy of the weather with no hope of cover. Weather can be very unpredictable in Florida and with my luck there would be an all day downpour on the day of our wedding.

The second plan was to have our wedding in my parents’ backyard. They have a great backyard that would be an amazing backdrop for the wedding but it had the same problems as the beach with the weather. The other problem is it just isn’t big enough, even for our limited guest list.

Our Frugal Wedding Venue

We ended up finding a great deal on a frugal wedding venue. We decided to have our wedding in a great public park in our city. All we had to do was talk to the leisure services board for our city and ask to reserve the park. The park has many great outside locations we could have the wedding and a covered area in case it rains so we’ll be fine no matter what the weather.

As far as cost goes, they do charge a fee of $100 to reserve the park for a 3 hour time block  and a $250 security deposit in case we need to set up electricity or some other service. We’ll get the security deposit back after clean up and leave the park the way we found it.

Our Frugal Reception Venue

We had to do a bit searching to find a frugal reception alternative that would work well for us. We actually asked some of our friends for ideas and many recommended a local community center in a nearby community in our city. They don’t charge their residents for use but we had to pay a $50 use fee and a $100 deposit which we’ll get back after we clean the place up when we leave.

The reception venue isn’t anything fancy but it doesn’t matter because fancy isn’t important to us. It is a nice building that provides tables, chairs a small kitchen area and a decent outside space. We get complete access to the venue the whole entire day of our wedding so we can have people there earlier in the day to set up if we want. We thought it was a steal for the price!

So now that we have the wedding venue and reception venue settled I’m sure we’ll have a lot more decisions to make. What should we be looking out for and do you have any frugal suggestions?

How Much A Cheap Cruise Really Costs

Carnival Cruise CostHave you ever wondered how much a cruise really costs? I’m going to give you a hint. It is much more than the list price you see when you’re looking into booking your first cruise. I still think a cruise is a great value but you need to be prepared for all of the costs. I just went on one of the cheaper cruises I could find and had a great time! I also kept track of all of our expenditures so I could give you this report.

The Cruise Ticket

The most obvious cost of the cruise is the cruise ticket itself. Since I went on this cruise with my girlfriend we bought two tickets. Each room cost the price of two tickets so if you’re planning on having a room to yourself expect to pay 150-200% of the listed price per ticket.

We went for the cheapest class of stateroom which is the interior class. We didn’t plan on spending a ton of time in our room so we didn’t feel like we needed to pay money for extra space or a window.

We booked early and due to that there were a few rooms available that were in the interior class but actually had two porthole windows. We definitely took advantage and booked these rooms at no extra cost above the price of a normal interior ticket.

We originally paid $279 for each ticket or $558 total. We managed to get $80 refunded to my credit card and $80 in on board credits due to the Early Saver program which saved me $160 dollars. This resulted in a total cost of $478 charged to my credit card for the cruise tickets themselves. After accounting for the $80 in on board credit the ticket price of our cruise was $398.

Taxes and Port Fees

You don’t get away that fast though! You’re also responsible for taxes and port fees which must be paid prior to the pay off date. I’m not sure what taxes are included as this cost wasn’t itemized. I do know that each port you stop in charges a port fee which the cruise line passes on to their guests. Taxes and port fees totaled $84.60 each or $169.20 total for the two tickets.

Traveling To and From the Port

We saved some money in this area by traveling with my parents who were going on the cruise as well. We split the cost of gas, tolls and the hotel for the night before the cruise. I ended up paying $60.00 in gas, $6.60 in road tolls and $62.44 for the hotel after splitting these costs with my parents.

While traveling we stopped for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the way to our hotel. We had some bad service at dinner so the general manager gave us our meal free. We still left a tip because the server was good. We only stopped for lunch on the way home from the cruise. I spent $46.38 on food on the way to and from the cruise for both my girlfriend and I. We spent a total of $175.42 on traveling to and from the cruise.

Arrival at the Departure Port

We arrived at the port and dropped our luggage off with the porter. It is customary to tip the porter $1 per bag so we paid him $2 for our two bags. In addition to that my parents had to park their car. Parking at the port was $15 a day and totaled $90 for the six days the car was parked at the port. We could have parked off site and taken a shuttle but my parents have had a bad experience with that in the past. I paid half for the parking making our port arrival costs $47.

Nassau Cruise PortVisiting Ports

Even though you’ve paid the port docking fees there isn’t any entertainment included in what you’ve paid for. We went on a history tour and snorkeling trip that included lunch at our first port in the Bahamas.

The excursion cost us $99 each or $198 total for the two of us. We did pay a premium as we organized the trip through Carnival Cruise Line. The excursion came with guarantees that the ship wouldn’t leave without us if something happened on our excursion along with other nuances. We didn’t want to run into any problems as first time cruisers.

We just walked around the city in our second and third ports. We stopped in all of the various touristy shops near the port and only bought a straw fan for $6 and a souvenir t-shirt for $17 that we had planned on buying before we left on the cruise. In total we spent $221 on in port activities. Think we’re close to being done on cruise spending? Nope, not yet!

On Board Drinks, Food and Entertainment

Our costs in this area were subsidized by my parents. They had bought us a first cruise gift package which included 4 drink tickets worth $5.75 each and a photo voucher worth $15, along with other gifts. In addition to the $23 in drink vouchers we spent an additional $12.08 on drinks. We got off lucky compared to many of people on the ship who seemed to be constantly drinking.

On the first day of the cruise my girlfriend won a $89 off certificate to the spa on the cruise ship. She had always wanted a massage so she splurged for a hot stone massage that ended up costing $65 after the discount, which is probably similar to what we’d pay locally for a massage so it wasn’t a horrible deal.

Cruise ship casinoWe ordered room service for breakfast a few times and it is customary to tip them as well. We ended up spending $8 on room service tips.

There was a casino on board the cruise ship as well! I had always wanted to try playing blackjack but it was $6 a hand. I did decide to play three separate times. The first time I won $6 and the second time I won $16. I was up $22 until I lost the $30 I brought the third time I played. Overall I lost $8 playing blackjack for a couple hours but I had a lot of fun. That isn’t too bad for entertainment dollars per hour. It could have been a lot worse though.

In total we spent $93.08 on board the ship for drinks, food and entertainment.

Pictures, Gifts and Other On Board Purchases

Every evening there are professional photographers begging you to let them take your picture. We decided to get a few pictures taken both on the casual and formal nights. We ended up spending $16.99 on pictures after accounting for the $15 voucher from my parents. We figured it was cheaper than getting a professional photo session back at home.

We bought some duty and tax free alcohol at a large discount compared to the prices back home. It set us back $49.98 but saved us money as we would have eventually purchased it at home for a much higher cost. We also purchased a t-shirt for a gift that was only $4.88. We discovered we weren’t drinking enough water so we bought a reusable water bottle for $6.50 to make sure we had water available to stay hydrated.

In total, we spent $78.35 on miscellaneous on board purchases. We did end up with a $13.96 on board credit for some reason so this brought our total down to $64.39 in this category.

Gratuities – Just When You Thought It Was Over There is More

Carnival adds gratuities on your statement on the last night of the cruise. They charge $11.50 per person per day which totaled $115.00 for us. We did pay this in advance of our cruise so we didn’t have to worry about it later.

You don’t have to pay the gratuities if you don’t want to but the crew do rely on them as a large part of their compensation. If you had any problems with your service or don’t feel you should have to pay that much you can go to guest services and reduce the gratuity amount on the last day of your cruise. We had outstanding service so we didn’t adjust our gratuity payments at all.

Finally Done

That’s it! Not a short list at all. We ended up spending $1,283.09 which really isn’t that bad for a 5 day cruise. In fact, it is only $256.62 per day or $128.31 per person per day. When you consider the fact that you get lodging, all the food you care to eat at three decent meals a day, entertainment and the chance to visit foreign countries the price really isn’t that bad at all.

We could have easily spent double that and I’m going to venture some people spent double that on just their cruise cabin. Hopefully I’ve enlightened you to some of the other expenses on cruises so you can budget for them better for your first cruise.

If you have any questions or comments about the cost or have a cruise experience you’d like to share please leave a comment below!

Free Travel Mug When You Buy A Hoveround… Seriously

hoveroundI recently saw one of the most absurd things I think I’ve ever seen to market a product on one of those wonderfully informative TV infomercials. If you buy a Hoveround you get a travel mug absolutely free! Just imagine, when you’re about to go ride your Hoveround down the side walk to your favorite store you can fill up your travel mug and take a drink with you.

It could be a tasty home made latte, a diet or regular soda or, if you want to be really thrifty, you can put water in that free travel mug you received with your purchase. I’m even going to bet that your free Hoveround travel mug will fit perfectly in your Hoveround cup holder… at least there better be one for this awesome product pairing!

All sarcasm aside, what in the world were these marketing executives thinking when they came up with this marketing promotion? Better yet, what in the world were the people who bought a Hoveround for a free travel mug thinking? Let’s investigate the first question before we get to the more absurd second question.

What the Marketing Executives Were Thinking

This travel mug likely costs Hoveround less than $5 so if it sold just 1 additional unit it was more than worth it to them. In fact, they could cover the cost of 599 travel mugs by selling just one Hoveround at $2,995. If the customer buys a more expensive model they could pay for even more travel mugs! Throwing in something this cheap is a no brainer for the Hoveround executives.

In addition to that they got some free advertising out of it. Notice how it was so outrageous I’m blogging about it? How many people do you think told their friends about this crazy stupid offer? I bet I wasn’t the only one…

What Were the People Who Bought a Hoveround Just for a Travel Mug Thinking?

To be honest, they weren’t. That is the only possible answer for it if they bought the Hoveround solely because of the free travel mug offer. Now if they were going to buy one anyway it does make sense to take advantage of this awesomely amazing offer. I mean, wouldn’t you want a free travel mug too?

If the travel mug pushed you over the edge and made you pull the trigger I personally would love to talk to you about your decision. You just paid at least $2,995 for a power wheelchair to get a $5 travel mug. I’d like to reiterate that you could have bought 599 travel mugs for the price of one Hoveround.

The absolute worst case I could see happening with this promotion is if someone got Medicare to pay for the Hoveround and the only reason the person wanted it was the free travel mug… If this is the case we have some serious problems.

The Lesson

Just because you are getting something for free for buying something else doesn’t mean it is a good deal. Would you buy a car if I gave you $500? I bet you have to pay full MSRP to get the $500 but it has to work on someone or else they wouldn’t pull these stunts. Think before you buy and evaluate the whole package for what it is, not for the free thing you happen to get with the purchase that seems really cool.

Have you ever fallen victim to a similar offering or do you have another hilarious story? This example was much easier to see due to the hilarity but there are smaller similar offers all the time! Share your story below to help us all watch out for these tricks!

How I Bought A House On A Whim and Why You Shouldn’t

How I Bought a Townhouse On a Whim and Why You Shouldn'tI bought the current townhouse we live in on a whim. We weren’t looking to buy a house and didn’t even think we’d own a house for the next few years… but here we are. So how did it happen and why shouldn’t you buy a house on a whim? Let’s dig into the details.

The Situation At The Time

I was working a job that I wasn’t a huge fan of. My girlfriend had just gotten a job in a town an hour and a half away. It also happened that my parents lived in the area. They had recently bought a townhouse near the beach to rent out to a relative. It seemed like they got a really great deal for the location and I thought that, given the opportunity, I’d like to own a similar townhouse one day…

Then it happened. A townhouse in the same exact townhouse row went up for sale! It sounded really appealing but I definitely hadn’t even thought seriously about buying a house at the time. I had been saving a bit of money for a house down payment but I thought it’d be at least three to five more years before I bought a house.

The townhouse was within walking distance to the beach and was cheap enough that I’d be able to scrounge up enough for a 20% down payment and closing costs required for my home loan. It was also within 20 minutes of my girlfriend’s new job which was a plus. Then, if she eventually got a job in the town I worked in we could rent the townhouse out easily for more than the expenses to run it.

We’d be able to afford owning the townhouse and renting a cheap place in the town I was working in at the time. It’d be tighter than I’d like but we could make it work within a reasonable budget. We liked the idea of the townhouse, the location, the rental potential and the fact that we could live in it if I got a job in the new town. We put in an offer and got the townhouse. It wasn’t quite that simple… but that’s a story for another post.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy a House on a Whim

We are very happy that we were able to and that we did purchase the townhouse. However, there are a few things we should have had in line before buying it.

First, since we didn’t plan on buying a house so soon I had to borrow money from some of my other targeted accounts. Don’t get me wrong, I had the cash available. I just had it saved for a different goal. Don’t fall into this trap or you might run into problems if you end up needing the money for something else. Luckily I was able to replenish this within a couple months of closing on the townhouse without any problems.

Second, we rushed into the deal due to high interest in the property. We didn’t look at any other houses or consider any other options. Our townhouse only has two bedrooms and one and a half baths. It is a bit small but is big enough for us for the next five to ten years… even if we get frustrated at times with some of the size constraints. When you’re buying a house you need to make sure it is the perfect fit for you. This isn’t a decision you can easily reverse without incurring some hefty costs. It ended up working out for us but once again we got lucky.

Finally, I didn’t have a job lined up in the new town. We did have a back up plan of renting the house out if my girlfriend found a job where I was living before we bought the townhouse but we didn’t have a clear plan of what we wanted to happen when we made the offer. We ended up both living in the new place despite it been an hour and a half away from my job at the time. About six months later I found a new job much closer to our townhouse. In a down economy this was a risky move but it paid off for us. Be prepared for a long hard road ahead if you do something similar.

Before you buy a house make sure you consider all of your options. Be prepared for the enormous decision of becoming a home owner.

Have you ever bought a house on a whim? What other tips would you recommend investigating before buying a house?

iPhone 5: How Cell Phone Companies Can Afford to Give You a $450 Discount

Apple fans are in a frenzy over the new iPhone 5 and I would expect the same after any Apple iPhone announcement. During their presentation they annouced their prices of the phone, and in fine print told you that in order to get this price you must sign a new 2 year contract. This isn’t breaking news to anyone who has bought a smartphone in the last few years. However, to those who only buy phones when you upgrade your contract it may be a bit of an eye opener.

The iPhone 5, with a two year contract, has been subsidized by the phone carriers to be offered at $199 for the 16 GB model, $299 for the 32 GB model and $399 for the 64 GB model. What they don’t tell you in their release conference is that the true retail price of the phone is actually $649 for the 16 Gb, $749 for the 32 GB and $849 for the 64 GB. You could buy a Wifi and Cellular Data enabled iPad $20 less than iPhone 5 at each price point!

After assessing my personal situation and asking you, my readers, “should I get a smartphone?” I decided it was time for me to join the smartphone revolution. I actually called AT&T and got a Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket for free before the Samsung Galaxy SIII came out. There was a question nagging at me after the transaction…

How Can Cell Phone Carriers Give You a $450+ Discount?

The key to cell phone carriers being able to take such a huge $450 hit on the phone up front is that nasty two year contract agreement you sign (or simply agree to) without thinking twice about. As a part of most of these agreements you MUST have a data plan and, as many of you know, they aren’t cheap. I personally opted for a 3 GB plan that cost $30 a month and if I go over they charge me an extra $10 per GB. There was a cheaper option for 300 MB for $20 a month but if you go over it cost $20 for each extra 300 MB you need.

Worst case (for the cell phone carriers) you have signed up for $480 2 year data plan and they have you locked in with their service for two years. Cell phone carriers just barely made back the two year contract discount they gave you. Keep in mind though that many people do opt for the largers plans like I have. If you opt for the $30 package they rake in $720 over the length of your contract. In addition to that, some people exceed their monthly limits and pay a higher price for less data in overage charges.

What Did Cell Phone Carriers Do Before Smartphones?

Cell phone carriers often offered free phones before the smartphone was invented! The key is they weren’t nearly as expensive or complicated as today’s smartphones. Honestly, today’s smartphones are essentially handheld computers. Cell phone carriers built their cell phone discount into their base plan rates which, at the time, only included minutes. You know, back when people actually talked on their cell phones…

Will you be splurging for an iPhone 5 without a contract upgrades? Will you be waiting until you are elligible for a contract upgrade? Or will you be like me and not get an iPhone? Let me know down below!
