Haha yes… if you have kids who want a pet I would advise against that… unless you want a pet too!
I don’t know about legislation in the US but it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving in the UK unless you have a hands-free device (even then, recent research shows that hands-free is still dangerous). You can get points on your driving licence and eventually lose it. But that doesn’t seem to stop people from doing it. It is very dangerous!
