Random Thoughts, Round Up and Carnivals #17

Random Thoughts

Last night my girlfriend and I watched American Reunion and we were entertained. We liked the original movies and this one was right in line with the originals. Then I got to thinking… it is never good when I get to thinking!

Were the popular movies always sequels or book adaptions? It seems like most of the decent movies I’ve seen were sequels of movies I liked when I was growing up or adaptations of books I read while I was growing up. Granted I’m only in my mid-twenties but there just haven’t been a ton of great original movies lately.

No I didn’t read or see the Twilight saga but I did have to read the Harry Potter books 1-4 for my college honors writing class… No, I’m not kidding. I recently read The Hunger Games and saw the movie (the book was better). There have been 3 Transformers movies, at least 4 American Pie movies, 3 Meet the Parents movies, at least 4 Shrek movies (I’ve lost count), 3 Star Wars prequels… the list goes on.

There have been a couple decent original movies but I can’t think of one off the top of my head. What happened to movies like Gladiator, The Patriot and other movies I watch whenever they’re being shown on TV? I don’t know but maybe I just liked movies a lot more when I was growing up…

Round Up

See Debt Run wrote about something that is so true, the job interview question that is always asked! Do You Have Any Questions for Us? I have been asked this question on every interview and always have a list of questions prepared! I refer to them to make sure I don’t forget anything and I feel it always showed I was really interested in the position. It hasn’t failed me yet!

Sweating the Big Stuff writes how the Chevy Volt is Not For Apartment Dwellers. I honestly never thought of getting a Chevy Volt but was interested to see how their weekend test drive went. They got hooked up through Klout and decided being an apartment dweller simply doesn’t work with this car.

Free Money Finance asked an interesting question, Do You Take Your Lunch Break? The article is pretty short and just poses a question but the interesting part is when you start reading the comments!

Thousandaire wrote about Protecting Your Income for a Recession. Regardless of how safe you think your job is this is a great read to give you a reality check. Protecting your income isn’t something to take lightly and you never know what can happen in a recession…

Curiosity Killed the Blog wrote about her sister starting a blog and how successful she has been within the first month! I do have to admit I’m a bit jealous but even if it takes me longer I’m in this for the long haul!

So are there any good original movies I should be checking out? What have you seen lately?

  1. Movies are definitely not as good today at they used to be. The last movie I saw was the new Batman and it was pretty good, but of course that was a sequel too. I think the problem is that Hollywood now spends so much on special effects and 3D filming that the actual plot and dialogue takes a back seat. The same thing happened to the video game industry. At some point technical skills started to dominate actual creativity.

  2. The movie business is still a business. They make movies to make money. They tend to go to the widest audience they can find. It may be 18-34 year olds or tennage boys, but they know summer movies are generally action flicks.

  3. I agree with Modest Money. I prefer some tv shows (Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, Revenge) to the movies I’ve seen recently.

  4. I think the sequels/series/offshoots of prior movies is because movies are such an investment that they’d rather take a risk on a movie that has potential for sequels than one-offs.

Seriously need to get in on these carnivals…

Hope you had a great weekend.
